YOSHIKI: Unpacking the Influence of a Global Music Icon and His Recognition as One of the Most Influential People in the World

Question from a reader:
I’ve heard that YOSHIKI was selected as one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” Is he really that influential? When I asked my American and French friends, neither of them knew who he was. I believe there are many more talented musicians in the world who have greater influence and recognition, so I’m genuinely
curious about why YOSHIKI was chosen.

Reflecting on YOSHIKI’s Influence

Recently, I was surprised to hear that YOSHIKI was named one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” After all, some of my American and French friends didn’t even know his name. I remember discussing this with my friends, and one of them asked, “What has he really done?”

What Is the Definition of Influence?

I completely understand the doubts regarding the selection criteria used by TIME magazine. While they claim “influence,” it might actually be based on buzz and media exposure. Indeed, there are many more well-known musicians and artists worldwide, and the list could go on with names from India, China, America, and Russia. Considering that, YOSHIKI’s selection does feel a bit arbitrary. Personally, I have been greatly influenced by YOSHIKI’s music and performances, so I’m happy about his recognition, but I sometimes wonder how it is perceived globally. Perhaps there is still a lack of ways to convey his charm to those who have never listened to his music.

My Experience and Feelings

The other day, I watched a documentary about YOSHIKI with some friends. I was moved by his passion and dedication, but one friend laughed and said, “Music really varies from person to person.” I also felt that when I lived in America, as people’s music preferences differed significantly by generation and country. It’s hard to understand how well-known Japanese artists are overseas without experiencing it firsthand. Moreover, while YOSHIKI’s music can sometimes feel heavy, I sense a strong energy in his performances. I think it’s wonderful to cherish what you love.
