Question from a reader:
Why hasn’t Ryoki been arrested for taking off with the PlayStation and going silent? Even if a family member steals, there are cases where they get arrested, so why is there no action taken against him? Will he be arrested in the future? I really feel uncomfortable with the actions of a scammer.
Thoughts on Ryoki’s Incident
Recently, I heard from a friend that Ryoki has taken off with a PlayStation and has gone silent. At first, I thought, “No way that could happen!” But when something like this happens close to home, it really is shocking. I also remembered a time when I borrowed manga from a friend and couldn’t get it back despite trying to contact him multiple times. Initially, I thought, “Maybe he’s just busy?” But as he continued to go silent, my frustration grew. In the end, I lost several thousand yen worth of manga and ended up drifting apart from him. It was truly a case of “taking off with something.”
Nothing can be done without reporting to the police
Hearing this story, I realized, as noted in the comments, that unless you report it to the police, the reality is that no arrest will happen. I once considered consulting the police about the manga incident, but I hesitated, thinking, “It’s not that big of a deal, and it would be awkward to tell my friend…” Ultimately, I didn’t take any action. Perhaps the same applies to Ryoki; since no report has been filed, the police might not be able to act. However, it’s truly unsettling to witness the actions of someone like a scammer. It’s unbelievable that they can casually take things we cherish away from us. If Ryoki were to reach out again, I’d be torn about how to respond. Should I be kind or confront him sternly? It’s a tough call.

By the way, has anyone else had similar experiences? Have you ever had a friend take off with something important or go silent on you? If so, I’d love to hear about it in the comments! It might help me relate better, and I hope that sharing our experiences can lighten our feelings a bit. Let’s all look out for each other!
