Understanding Your Dislike for Popular Celebrities: Embracing Individual Preferences and Experiences

Question from a reader:
I have a hard time with Shohei Ohtani, Yuzuru Hanyu, and Masaharu Fukuyama. Everyone around me loves them, but I just can’t accept them. Is this because I’m being difficult? I’m a middle-aged woman.

What do you think about celebrities you dislike?

Hello! Recently, I heard someone say they have a hard time with Shohei Ohtani, Yuzuru
Hanyu, and Masaharu Fukuyama. I understand the feeling of not being able to accept someone that everyone else seems to love. I also sometimes feel overwhelmed by the excessive media coverage of certain figures, which makes me pull back a bit.

My personal experience

Actually, there was a time when I also had difficulty with certain celebrities. For instance, there was a famous comedian who was very popular, and while everyone was laughing at his jokes, I just couldn’t find them funny at all. During that time, I felt a bit isolated, struggling with the frustration of not being able to enjoy something that everyone else seemed to love. One day, I decided to watch a special program featuring that comedian with a friend who was a huge fan. She insisted, “You have to watch it! It’s going to be hilarious!” In the end, while my friend was laughing her heart out, I sat quietly eating potato chips. Each time she burst out laughing, I found myself questioning, “Why can’t I appreciate this?” However, seeing her smile gradually softened my feelings.

About feelings of rejection

I understand the sentiment of thinking, “Maybe I’m just being difficult.” However, I don’t believe that’s a bad thing. It’s not necessary for everyone to like the same things, and it’s important to value your own feelings. In fact, I think our individual preferences are what make things interesting. Our emotions are often influenced by our values and experiences, sometimes without us even realizing it. Therefore, there’s no need to forcefully try to accept someone you don’t like; feeling that way can sometimes feel like a waste of time.
