Understanding the Psychology Behind Online Negativity: Why Some People Speak Ill of Celebrities

Reader’s Question:
I’ve been thinking about the characteristics of people who speak ill of others, particularly those who use smartphones to spread negativity about celebrities online. How should I feel about such behavior? Does it really lead to them being disliked?

Characteristics of People Who Speak Ill of Others and Their Impact

Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on
those who speak ill of celebrities online. I find the psychology behind such behavior quite intriguing. Personally, I often watch comedy and laugh, so sometimes speaking ill can be part of that comedic context, but it feels different when it comes to online negativity.

Observations on Online Negativity from My Experience

I remember watching a documentary about a celebrity with friends. We were discussing their success and character, but when we checked social media, I was surprised to see others harshly criticizing that celebrity. There was a stark contrast between our views and those online, and it felt strange. My friend seemed to feel the same way and chuckled, saying, “The internet is scary,” but there was a hint of sadness behind that laughter. In many cases, it seems that those who speak ill of others do so to fulfill their own desires. Perhaps they want to feel superior by attacking someone else. Thinking that way evokes a bit of sympathy for them, as they might also be grappling with unmet needs in some aspect of their lives.

Reasons I Prefer Not to Engage

Like many, I find that I don’t want to engage with such people. A friend once told me that they seemed to have a “bad personality,” and it’s true that without some common ground, I want to keep my distance from those who engage in such behavior. It’s truly unfortunate that they hurt others just to feel better about themselves.
