Understanding the Culture of Silence: Why Bystanders Often Look the Other Way in Workplace Harassment Cases

Reasons Why Surrounding Adults Looked the Other Way

Recently, I’ve been reflecting a lot on a particular incident involving Nakai-san and how those around him responded. This isn’t just an isolated case; it deeply relates to the workplace dynamics and societal structures we often encounter. First, regarding why the adults around Nakai-san did not intervene in his actions, I sometimes
observe colleagues and supervisors at my part-time job who choose to look the other way. Especially in workplaces where power dynamics are pronounced, it becomes challenging to speak up between those with authority and those without. I can understand the hesitation people might feel about whether they should speak up against the actions of a public figure like Nakai-san. I, too, have struggled with whether to raise my voice when I’ve seen someone being treated unfairly at my job.

The Culture of Silence

Moreover, the existence of a “culture of silence” plays a significant role in this issue. For instance, even when workplace harassment is recognized as a problem, a subtle atmosphere of “it’s better not to say anything” can develop. It’s almost like a childhood game where everyone participates in looking the other way. I’ve found myself in situations with friends, wondering, “What will happen if I say this?”

Ignoring Medical Reports

Another shocking aspect is that multiple PTSD diagnoses were ignored by the company. As someone studying law, I often reflect on why such decisions were made. It’s unbelievable that, despite having medical reports, the situation was dismissed internally as just “a dispute between men and women.” At my part-time job, I’ve also experienced instances where genuine concerns are downplayed as mere complaints. This kind of misunderstanding can further push those in distress into a corner.

Sharing Everyone’s Experiences

Such issues lurk everywhere. We must not forget that how those around us act can significantly impact victims. I want to be more observant and brave in speaking up. I hope everyone else feels the same way. Please share any incidents or feelings you’ve experienced in the comments. Your experiences might help someone in need.
