Understanding the Concept of “Believers” in Support of the Akishino Family and Aiko-sama: A Deeper Look at Respect for the Imperial Family

Question from a reader:
There are opinions suggesting that those who support the Akishino family are “believers,” but aren’t those who praise Aiko-sama also believers in the same way?

The Debate on “Believers” and Respect for the Imperial Family

Recently, I was discussing with a friend the fact that supporters of the Akishino family are being called “believers.” He posed the
question, “Aren’t those who praise Aiko-sama also believers?” It’s true that depending on how passionately one supports a viewpoint, they may be seen as a believer. Whether or not this perception is accurate, I find it to be a rather unproductive narrative. Personally, I hold respect for the Imperial Family. Honoring the Emperor and the royal family is, I believe, a part of my identity as a Japanese person. I recall when I was working part-time at a judicial scrivener’s office, a senior colleague said, “The law is the foundation of the nation, and the existence of the Emperor is deeply intertwined with it.” This was a moment when I truly felt that both the law and the Imperial Family are crucial elements in maintaining social order.

Reflections Amidst Unproductive Conflicts

The opinions regarding Aiko-sama and the Akishino family seem to clash, much like fans of rival baseball teams engaging in spirited support. Both sides are convinced that their support is justified, which inevitably leads to arguments. I sometimes wonder if, instead of engaging in such disputes, we should focus on more important matters. Speaking of which, I remember when I was having lunch in the park with a friend, he remarked, “Recent news has been filled with nothing but trivial matters.” Indeed, no matter how passionately we debate, the existence of the Imperial Family does not change. It might be far more meaningful to enjoy the small things in our daily lives.
