Understanding Goku’s Financial Struggles: The Reality Behind Heroic Fame in Dragon Ball Super

Question from readers:
I’ve been watching Dragon Ball Super, and something caught my attention. Goten said, “If Mom made Dad like Mr. Satan, our household finances would be easier.” Goku is someone who defeated Demon King Piccolo and received the Blue Star Medal at a young age (although he never actually received it). Couldn’t he earn some Zeni by teaming up
with Mr. Satan and Majin Buu?

Considering Goku and Household Financial Issues

Recently, while watching Dragon Ball Super, Goten’s words stuck with me. He mentioned, “If Mom made Dad like Mr. Satan, our household finances would be easier.” It’s true that Goku is a hero who defeated Demon King Piccolo and should have some fame. Yet, I found it a bit puzzling as to why their household finances are struggling.

The Gap Between Heroic Fame and Reality

As I study law, I often reflect on the weight of “fame.” I wonder how much Goku’s reputation as the hero who defeated Demon King Piccolo influences people. His name is indeed well-known. However, over time, that fear may fade. When I see Piccolo blending into the city as a superhero, it makes me realize how fragile the concept of heroic fame can be. Still, teaming up with Mr. Satan and Majin Buu could definitely lead to earning a lot of money. They participate in various events and TV shows, so leveraging their popularity would be a smart move. However, I can’t imagine Goku doing such things. He loves to fight and is a man who cherishes peace. I worry that getting involved in such worldly matters might create a distance between him and the gods.

Goku’s Character and Choices

When I think about Goku’s character, he has a strong sense of justice but also possesses an innocent side. The idea of him teaming up with Mr. Satan or Buu solely for profit feels a bit off. Interestingly, his innocence sometimes confuses those around him. For instance, when family gathers, he is always hungry and innocently devours snacks, resembling a child and making everyone around him smile. I sometimes find myself overeating snacks after coming home from work. Especially when I’m with friends, I get so caught up in the conversation that I realize I’ve piled up a mountain of snacks on the table. In those moments, I feel like I can relate a little to Goku.
