Understanding Disruptive Behavior in Restaurants: Causes and Social Media Influence

Question from a reader:
Why do people engage in disruptive behavior when dining out? Recently, I saw news about a woman who posted a video on Instagram of herself drinking water directly from a beef bowl chain restaurant. Although the video was quickly taken down, it continues to be a topic of conversation online. What are the reasons behind such behavior?

Why do disruptive behaviors occur while dining out?

I was quite surprised to see the news about someone drinking water directly from a cup at a beef bowl restaurant. I
can’t help but wonder what she was thinking when she posted that video on Instagram. Of course, I find such behavior to be quite unreasonable, but it made me think about the reasons behind it.

Strong Desire for Approval

I personally love comedy and often go out to eat with friends, and I believe that manners are important in these settings. Especially when someone tries to stand out in a public place, it makes me think that they might have a strong desire for approval. Perhaps she wanted to gather a little attention by posting that video. The influence of social media is indeed very significant.

Lack of Common Sense and Education

Nonetheless, it’s hard not to feel that such actions reflect a lack of common sense. I remember being told by my parents as a child, “You shouldn’t do things like this in public.” As we grow older, we tend to become more aware of how we are perceived by others, but perhaps some people haven’t developed that sense. A lack of education could also be a contributing factor.

Recall of a Funny Incident

By the way, I have had my own little mishap while dining out. Once, when I went to a family restaurant with a friend, I was looking at the menu while my friend intended to order something for himself but accidentally shouted, “I’ll have everything, large size!” In that moment, the restaurant fell silent, and everyone turned to look at us. I remember feeling embarrassed yet laughing at the reactions of those around us. While I don’t engage in unreasonable behavior, such funny moments do occur.
