Reader’s Question:
I’m a middle school student who recently got into Gundam. I started with the original series, but when I try to watch other works, I find the stories uninteresting and the mobile suits have designs that I think are too over-the-top. After watching just a few episodes, I lose
interest. After finishing the original series, I tried watching Zeta Gundam, but I didn’t like the background music, opening theme, mecha designs, or character designs at all. Is there anyone knowledgeable about Gundam who can recommend a series that has the same overwhelming presence as the original? Also, I believe the designs of the mobile suits in the original series are far superior to those in other works. What do you all think?
Finding Your Place in the Gundam Universe
Hey there! I totally get where you’re coming from. Diving into Gundam can feel a bit overwhelming, especially when you start with the original series, which is such a classic. The characters, the music, the designs—they all have this raw energy that just clicks, right? It’s like the first time you hear your favorite song; it resonates deeply and leaves a mark. I remember my first experience with Gundam as if it were yesterday. I was lounging on my couch, snacks scattered around me like a mini buffet, and I stumbled upon the original Mobile Suit Gundam series. I was hooked instantly! The storytelling was so rich, and the character dynamics were just perfect. I can still recall the moment when Amuro Ray first piloted the Gundam. I was practically jumping off the couch! But then, like you, I tried to branch out. Zeta Gundam was my next stop. I went in with high hopes, only to feel that familiar sense of disconnect. The music? A bit too dramatic for my taste. The designs? They felt like they strayed too far from the grounded vibe of the first series. I remember thinking, “What happened to the simplicity?” It’s almost like they took a classic recipe and added too many ingredients, diluting the original flavor. Your comment about the overwhelming presence of the original Gundam really struck me. It’s true; the first series has this magnetic quality that seems hard to replicate. The creators poured their souls into it, and that sincerity and authenticity resonate on a different level. In many ways, it seems like subsequent series, including Zeta, tried to capture that magic but ended up feeling a bit forced and confined. Now, regarding recommendations, I would suggest giving Crossbone Gundam a try. It’s a bit different from the traditional formula, but it has its own charm and could scratch that itch for something fresh yet somewhat reminiscent of the original. And if you’re open to a wild ride, G Gundam might surprise you with its quirky approach. Sure, it’s a departure from the serious tone, but sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to unexpected joy! The dialogue around Gundam can be pretty intense, too. I love how passionate fans can be—like the user who pointed out that if you think the first series is the pinnacle, then anything else feels lacking. It’s almost like a friendly rivalry among fans, trying to defend their favorite series. So, what do you think? Have you discovered any hidden gems in the Gundam universe? Or maybe you’ve stumbled upon a series that surprised you in a good way? I’d love to hear your thoughts or any tips you might have for fellow fans navigating through the vast world of Gundam! Let’s keep the conversation going!
