I’ve been thinking a lot about how Yuzuru Hanyu became a global superstar. The history and culture of figure skating in Japan have certainly played a significant role. I, too, love
watching figure skating, and Hanyu’s performances have moved me time and again. The first thing that comes to mind is, of course, the Olympics. Particularly, the Sapporo Olympics, which greatly heightened Japan’s enthusiasm for figure skating. As a child, I admired the performances of Janet Lynn, and it’s possible that the athletes inspired by her have led to the emergence of today’s Hanyu.
The Efforts of Predecessors and Their Impact
I feel that our passion for figure skating is supported by the efforts of those who came before us. For example, the achievements of Shizuka Arakawa and Takeshi Honda have contributed to our enjoyment of this sport. Hearing stories about their training camps in Nobeyama makes me realize how their hard work has paved the way for athletes like Hanyu. Personally, I remember going to a figure skating competition with friends. The competition itself was amazing, but what stands out to me is how we indulged in snacks in the audience. I ended up so full that I dozed off a bit during the second half of the event. Nevertheless, the emotions I felt after the performances ended are something I will never forget.
