The Importance of Reporting Without Real Names: Balancing Ethics and Public Awareness

Question from the readers:
There are often reports in the news that do not disclose real names. If real names cannot be mentioned, shouldn’t such reports be avoided altogether?

The Challenges and Necessity of Reporting Real Names

Recently, I was discussing with friends how there seems to be an increasing number of news reports that do not disclose real names. The ongoing debate, especially around juvenile crime reporting, raises the question of whether it would be better not to report at all if real names cannot be used. While I agree
that the absence of real names can feel somewhat lacking, what is the reality of the situation?

Juvenile Crimes and Social Impact

In my opinion, even when real names are not disclosed, there is still significance in reporting. Particularly heinous incidents, like the “Concrete Murder Case” involving a high school girl, have a profound impact on society. The lack of real name publication allows us to comprehend the seriousness of such events and can serve as a catalyst for increased vigilance. Recently, while watching a special on juvenile crime on television, I felt a weighty sadness that contrasted sharply with the lightheartedness of a comedy show. However, I reaffirmed to myself how important it is to understand the gravity of these events.

Choices in Reporting and Victims’ Wishes

One reason for not disclosing real names is the wishes of the victims and their families. In cases like the Kyoto Animation arson attack, reports may be limited based on requests from the bereaved families. This presents a much more complicated choice than we might expect. Those in the media are aware of their social responsibilities and make careful judgments. As a parent, watching reports about such incidents makes me feel a tightness in my chest when I consider what it would mean if my own child were involved. At the same time, if these reports help others develop a sense of urgency and gain knowledge to protect themselves and their families, then I believe they serve a meaningful purpose.
