Should We Respect Shigeru Ishiba? Exploring Perspectives on a Controversial Figure

Question from a reader:
Should we respect Shigeru Ishiba?

My Thoughts on Shigeru Ishiba

The discussions surrounding Shigeru Ishiba are indeed diverse. Whether or not to respect him largely depends on individual values and experiences. His act of hoisting the sumo championship cup was certainly impressive and conveyed a sense of strength. When I saw that moment, I couldn’t help but
chuckle. It was reminiscent of a child proudly showcasing a toy bigger than themselves, and it was genuinely heartwarming. However, I understand the opinions that label him as “a disgrace to Japan.” His actions and statements as a politician can sometimes be uncomfortable for the public or fail to meet expectations. In fact, while working part-time at a judicial scrivener’s office, I often feel the influence of politics amidst the discussions surrounding legal matters. Personally, I have a weak emotional connection to respecting specific individuals. Perhaps I find more significant values in the small events of daily life and my interactions with those around me. For example, the casual chats with colleagues over snacks at my part-time job or the moments spent sharing knowledge gained from reading with friends—these small joys accumulate and hold more importance for me.

I Want to Hear Everyone’s Opinions

Ultimately, who we choose to respect is a matter of personal freedom, and we cannot change how others feel. However, sharing what we each feel and think through our experiences could certainly lead to new discoveries. So, I encourage everyone to comment on the individuals they respect and the reasons behind their choices. Sometimes, gaining insights from others’ perspectives can lead to new realizations. I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
