When the topic of Saito Motohiko and Saito Shigekichi comes up, I find myself inevitably drawn to the latter. The depth of his poetry and the emotional struggles he expresses continue to resonate with many people today. As someone who studies
psychology in college, I particularly relate to many aspects of Shigekichi’s work.
Encountering Shigekichi’s Works
The first time I read Shigekichi’s poetry was during a university class. The professor emphasized the importance of feeling the emotions conveyed in the poem and handed out his poetry collection to everyone. I remember being captivated by the profound world of poetry, and I found myself rereading it multiple times. In particular, the poem “Akakou” had a powerful resonance that struck deep within my heart.
