Question from the reader:
I’ve heard that there was a wonderful pitcher named Hasegawa in the Hiroshima Carp. Is that true? How does he compare to Kitabeppu?
Hiroshima Carp Legend, Ryohei Hasegawa
Hello, everyone! Recently, I had the chance to talk about the Hiroshima Carp, and whenever I mention Ryohei Hasegawa, I can’t help but get excited. He was the ace
pitcher who supported the team during its formative years, and he was truly an incredible player. With a total of 197 wins, his record is indeed impressive. The first time I heard about Hasegawa was when I went to watch a Carp game with friends. Before the game started, the fans around us were passionately discussing Hasegawa’s legend, sharing how much he contributed to the team. As I listened in, his achievements felt almost cinematic, and I still remember the thrill I felt at that moment.
Comparison with Kitabeppu
Now, regarding the comparison with Kitabeppu, it’s true that Kitabeppu has more career victories. However, Hasegawa also played a significant role during his era, so I believe it’s hard to definitively say which one is superior. Of course, numbers are important, but baseball is ultimately a human drama. In my opinion, Hasegawa had a unique charisma, and it’s easy to understand why fans were drawn to his pitching style and performances. Just imagining how excited the fans must have been watching him pitch is enjoyable.
