Hearing stories about Tadao Hike evokes a sense of nostalgia. He passed away in 2015, nearly a decade ago. His life embodied the essence of the Showa era. Born into a wealthy family as the son of a practicing physician, he earned a doctorate from the University
of Tokyo and subsequently enjoyed a free-spirited gay lifestyle, captivating many with his way of living. There have been times when I aspired to live as freely as Hike did. I admired his audacity, and at the same time, it prompted me to reflect on my own life choices. One day, during a law class, I quoted one of his works, and the professor’s reaction was amusing. He remarked, “Hike’s perspective transcends the boundaries of law,” and the entire classroom erupted in laughter. In that moment, I was reminded of how precious his unique viewpoint truly is.
The Intersection of Law and Daily Life
While working part-time at a judicial scrivener’s office, I feel the law seamlessly intertwining with everyday life. For instance, during client meetings, hearing about their complex life backgrounds and relationships reminds me of the human dramas that Hike portrayed. When I think about how much the law influences people’s lives, it brings a sense of seriousness to my role. That said, our office has a constant supply of snacks, which sometimes leads me to overindulge. Particularly, I look forward to snacking on sweet treats during breaks, and at times, I find it hard to stop. My colleagues might chuckle and say, “Are you eating again?” but this playful banter contributes to the lighthearted atmosphere in the workplace.
