Question from a Reader:
I was very surprised to hear about the passing of Ayako Sono. Can you share your memories or impressions of her works and activities?
Memories of Ayako Sono
Upon hearing the news of Ayako Sono’s passing, I felt as though a hole had opened in my heart. Her works held great significance for me, and I was
always impressed by her unique perspective and profound insight.
Memories of Jiyugaoka and Den’enchōfu
I also visit Jiyugaoka from time to time since my daughter lives nearby, and I often stroll around that area. One day, out of curiosity, I decided to go to the next station, Den’enchōfu. To my surprise, I stumbled upon the nameplate of Ayako Sono and Akamatsu Shun. I passed by without thinking much of it, but later recalled her name and found myself stopping in my tracks. The thought that she might have lived in that very spot filled me with a strange sense of wonder. It felt as if I was being drawn into the world of her literature.
The Impact of Her Works
The book “Kairōroku,” which I recently read, held deep meaning for me. Her words encapsulate the harshness and beauty of life, and there are many aspects I consider as examples of how to live and think. Particularly, her works set against the backdrop of the Meiji Restoration and post-war Japan sensitively capture the changes of the times and seem to convey important messages to us. Recalling her voice from the morning radio, which I listened to for ten minutes, warms my heart. Sometimes it included laughter, while other times it made me reflect; it felt like chatting with a friend.
