Question from Readers:
After 51 years since “The Miracle of Kinshasa,” do you think there are many people who don’t know George Foreman?
Time Spent with George Foreman
Recently, while discussing boxing with friends, George Foreman’s name came up. Many people know about him, but I think fewer have actually seen his matches. Especially for the younger generation, there are likely
many who have never watched him in action.
Foreman in My Memory
I personally have memories of my father watching Foreman’s matches when I was a child. Boxing during that era was truly thrilling! I remember my father excitedly saying, “Look, this is Foreman!” His eyes sparkled, and even after the match, he would reflect, “Foreman is so strong.” However, for today’s generation, while they might catch highlights on YouTube, opportunities to watch full matches are becoming rare. I recently revisited some of the old fights, and I was amazed by the power of Foreman’s punches. That kind of intensity might be hard to find in today’s athletes.
Changing Perceptions with Age
During my conversation with friends, when Foreman’s name came up, one of them said, “I know the name, but I’ve never seen a match.” For the current younger generation, he exists as a “great boxer from the past,” but they might not know much about his actual matches or career. It’s similar with the comedy and entertainment we enjoyed in our generation—fewer people are familiar with the classic works. That’s why I believe it’s important to talk about great boxers and comedians. Passing on the legends they’ve built to the next generation is crucial.
