Travel Plans Update
As I sit here in Ehime, sipping on a steaming cup of coffee, I can’t help but reflect on my travel plans. I was initially thrilled about my day trip to the Shimanami Kaido. The idea of
cycling through breathtaking landscapes while stopping by charming cafes was incredibly appealing. However, the weather had other plans for me. Today, the skies have opened up, and it’s a rainy day that makes outdoor adventures less than ideal. With my return journey to Kobe looming, I need to adjust my itinerary to accommodate the weather, and I’d love your suggestions!
Exploring Onomichi
One of the first places that comes to mind is Onomichi. This quaint coastal town is known for its scenic hills, historic temples, and delightful waterfront. Even on a rainy day, the charm of Onomichi remains intact. A visit to the Onomichi City Museum of Art could be a perfect indoor activity; it features contemporary art exhibitions and stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. If the rain lightens up, a stroll along the Onomichi Temple Walk, where you can visit several temples, could be a peaceful way to pass the time while soaking in the town’s ambiance.
Fukuyama’s Hidden Gems
Next on my list is Fukuyama, famous for its castle and beautiful surrounding parks. Fukuyama Castle is a historical landmark, offering indoor exhibits that showcase the history and culture of the region. The castle grounds are also lovely for a quick walk if the rain takes a break. Moreover, the Fukuyama Rose Park, even if it’s too wet to explore fully, can still be enjoyed from under a sheltered area. The vibrant colors of the roses can be appreciated even in a drizzle!
Okayama’s Cultural Offerings
If I have time, I’d love to swing by Okayama. Known for its beautiful gardens and historical sites, Okayama has the iconic Korakuen Garden. While the garden is best enjoyed in sunshine, it can still provide a serene experience during light rain. The nearby Okayama Castle is another must-see, where indoor exhibits can keep me entertained while I wait for the downpour to subside. The atmosphere can be quite magical in the rain, with the castle reflecting beautifully in the puddles.
Indoor Activities to Consider
In addition to these towns, I’m on the lookout for cozy cafes or unique shops along the way. A visit to a local coffee shop to escape the rain and enjoy a warm drink sounds perfect. Maybe I’ll stumble upon a little gallery or craft shop to explore, adding a delightful twist to my day. Rainy days can be an opportunity to explore the indoor culture of Japan, from art to food to local craftsmanship.
Final Thoughts
While my plans for a picturesque cycling adventure along the Shimanami Kaido have been thwarted, I am determined to make the best of my day. With the charm of Onomichi, the history of Fukuyama, and the beauty of Okayama at my fingertips, I know that my journey can still be memorable, rain and all.
