Question from the readers:
I’ve heard that there are many voices wishing for Emperor Aiko recently, but do the entire public really feel this way? There’s talk about a harsh gaze towards Prince Hisahito, but what are the actual opinions of the public? The right-wing supports male heirs, while some left-wing individuals call for abolition. I wonder if there really are
that many people wishing for Emperor Aiko.
Thoughts on the Imperial System
Recently, I’ve heard many voices wishing for Emperor Aiko, but to be honest, I feel a bit doubtful about this trend. The opinions of the public regarding Aiko becoming emperor are truly diverse and cannot be easily summarized. Among my friends, there are many who wish for Emperor Aiko, but whether that reflects the opinions of the entire public is questionable. Certainly, when I watched Aiko’s coming-of-age press conference, I was moved by her growth and demeanor, and I understand the sentiment that she represents hope for Japan’s future. However, seeing that this sentiment isn’t reflected in elections makes me feel that it hasn’t fully permeated yet.
Reactions and Memories from Around Me
Personally, I am not very knowledgeable about the imperial system, and I honestly didn’t even know the term “male heir.” Many of my friends believe that it’s only natural for the emperor’s children to become emperor. One day, while drinking with a friend at an izakaya, we started talking about the emperor. He laughed and said, “It would be a bit interesting if Aiko became emperor.” Moments like that, where we can discuss such topics lightly, make me feel a sense of familiarity. However, there are still many around me who seem disinterested, thinking, “Isn’t male heirs what really matters?” Among my friends, some feel that it’s natural for the emperor’s child to succeed, while others feel resistance to the idea of a woman like Aiko becoming emperor. This diversity of opinion may be what makes this topic fascinating.
Hope for the Future
After watching Prince Hisahito’s coming-of-age press conference, I felt a bit reassured. Listening to his words made me think that Japan’s future might be okay. Still, there are lingering anxieties. I have some concerns regarding the protocol manners of the Akishino couple. Nonetheless, it’s a blessing to be able to have hope in Prince Hisahito. While there are many voices wishing for Emperor Aiko, I want to know how many people are seriously considering it. I’m also keen to observe how the Japanese imperial family will evolve in the future.
