Meeting Ootomo Kohei and Hound Dog
Good evening! Today, I want to talk about Ootomo Kohei and Hound Dog. Did you know that he has been a member since the very moment the band was formed? I just recently found out and couldn’t help but exclaim,
“Wow!” In 1976, Ootomo, who was still a university student at that time, was approached by the first guitarist, Takahashi Yoshihide. They formed the band together with friends from the light music club, which really gives off a youthful vibe. I can relate a lot because I also thought about starting a band with friends during my school days.
Early Stories
What comes to mind for me is the time I was enjoying music with friends during college. One day, a friend said, “Let’s start a band!” and gathering together is a fond memory. In the end, we barely managed to practice and just ended up snacking instead (laughs). Ootomo must have experienced similar struggles and joys during his younger years. It’s hard to imagine that Ootomo was in charge of drums and vocals back then. When I hear his powerful singing voice, I can feel the energy from that time. It’s almost as if we are right there with them.
The Journey from Formation to Now
Hound Dog went on to achieve massive hits and has become an indispensable part of the Japanese music scene. I can’t help but reflect on how Ootomo’s talent and efforts have brought them this far. His songs always give me courage. By the way, I was recently watching some live footage and was amazed by how his performance hasn’t diminished at all! It’s truly wonderful that his passion remains unchanged with age.
