Visiting Sapporo for My Child’s University Entrance Exam Next Month
So, I’m heading to Sapporo next month for my child’s university entrance exam. It’s a big deal, right? I’m excited for them, but also a little nervous—okay, maybe more than
a little. This will be my first time in Hokkaido, and honestly, I’m just as excited to explore as I am to support my kid. I mean, who wouldn’t be? Sapporo sounds like a winter wonderland (even if it’s not quite winter yet).
Here’s the thing: on the day of the exam, I’ll have the entire day to myself. At first, I felt a little guilty about the idea of sightseeing while my child is sweating over their exam. But then I thought, “Hey, I’m already here, and I might as well make the most of it!” So, I started researching places to visit, and now I’m buzzing with ideas. The Clock Tower, TV Tower, JR Tower Observatory, Shiroi Koibito Park, Moiwa Mountain, the Statue of Dr. Clark, and the Beer Factory are all on my radar. Oh, and I even considered popping over to Otaru, but I’m not sure if that’s too ambitious for one day. What do you think?
My One-Day Sapporo Adventure Plan
Here’s how I’m thinking of spending my day:
Morning: I’ll start at the Sapporo Clock Tower. It’s iconic, right? I’ve seen so many pictures of it, and I can’t wait to see it in person. Maybe I’ll even snap a cheesy tourist photo to send to my kid later (if they’re not too stressed to appreciate it). After that, I’ll head to the Sapporo TV Tower. I hear the view from the top is stunning, and I’m a sucker for a good view. Plus, I’ll probably grab a coffee nearby because, let’s be real, I’ll need the caffeine boost.
Midday: Next up is the JR Tower Observatory. I’ve heard it’s one of the best spots to see the city from above. I’m imagining myself standing there, taking in the panoramic views, and maybe even spotting the exam hall where my child is hard at work. (Okay, that might be a stretch, but a mom can dream!) Afterward, I’ll head to Shiroi Koibito Park. I mean, who can resist a chocolate factory? I’m already planning to buy way too many souvenirs, even though I know I shouldn’t.
Afternoon: I’m thinking of taking a quick trip to Moiwa Mountain. The ropeway ride sounds like a fun little adventure, and the views are supposed to be breathtaking. I might even treat myself to a snack at the top—because, hey, I deserve it after all that walking, right?
Evening: To wrap up the day, I’ll visit the Statue of Dr. Clark and maybe stop by the Sapporo Beer Factory. I’m not a huge beer drinker, but I’ve heard the history of the place is fascinating. Plus, I can’t leave Sapporo without trying some local brews, even if it’s just a small tasting.
Should I Go to Otaru?
I’ve been debating whether to squeeze in a trip to Otaru. It’s only about 30 minutes away by train, and I’ve heard it’s charming with its canals and glassworks. But I’m worried it might be too much for one day. What do you think? Should I save Otaru for another trip, or is it worth the detour?
Final Thoughts
I’m really looking forward to this trip, even though it’s bittersweet. It’s a big milestone for my child, and I’m so proud of them. But I’m also excited to explore a new city and make some memories of my own. I’ll probably overpack snacks (because I always do) and arrive way too early everywhere (classic me), but that’s all part of the adventure, right?
If you’ve been to Sapporo or have any tips for my one-day itinerary, I’d love to hear them! Drop a comment below and let me know what you think. And if you’ve been in a similar situation—traveling solo while your kid is busy with something important—I’d love to hear your stories too. Let’s share the journey together!
