Memories of Yoshida Yoshio and 1985

Hello! Today, I’d like to talk about Yoshida Yoshio, known as “Ushiwakamaru” from the former Hanshin Tigers, especially regarding the championship in 1985. To
be honest, I had mixed feelings that year as I was a Giants fan at the time. However, witnessing the excitement of the Hanshin fans, I found myself drawn into that atmosphere.

The Moment of Victory

The Hanshin Tigers’ victory in 1985 was a historic event in Japanese professional baseball. The entire city turned into a sea of Hanshin colors, and the fan celebrations were truly something special. I remember cheering in front of the TV with my friends, and when I heard about Kiyohara’s FA interview, I couldn’t help but laugh. Yoshida’s words, “I want him to come even if I have to change the vertical stripes to horizontal,” captured his passion and humor, and they still resonate with me today.

Mysterious Charm

I believe that it was players like Yoshida who fueled the excitement around Hanshin. Not only was his performance impressive, but his love for the fans and his communication with them were also remarkable. Watching him take photos with fans and give autographs after games made me realize, “This is why baseball is so enjoyable—because of players like him.” I also remember going to Hanshin games with my friends back then. We would arrive early, stock up on beer and snacks, and soak in the stadium atmosphere. There were times when I overindulged and ended up with a full stomach before the game even started (laughs). Yet, those joyful memories remain vivid in my mind.
