Question from a reader:
I asked a question in this category, but there are people who insult and block those who disagree with their opinion. Isn’t this a violation of the rules?
Thoughts on Online Defamation
Recently, I’ve heard discussions about online exchanges becoming problematic due to defamation. It’s quite unfortunate that some individuals resort to using aggressive language before
blocking those with differing opinions. I occasionally use a Q&A platform, and the exchanges there can sometimes get heated. When someone dismisses my thoughtful opinion by saying things like, “That’s meaningless,” or “Shut up, you idiot,” it definitely stings. Just because it’s online doesn’t mean we should forget that our words can hurt others.
My Experience
Actually, there was a time when I seriously responded to a question. I took the time to research and write my answer, but was met with a blunt dismissal from another user saying, “That opinion is nonsense.” In that moment, I felt an indescribable emotion. Deep down, I expected some pushback, but direct attacks still leave one feeling unsettled. Moreover, when I was told afterward, “I’ll add you to my blacklist,” I couldn’t help but laugh. It felt like something out of a grade school fight. It was a bit disappointing to realize that such behavior exists even in the adult world.
Instead of Defamation
Disagreements online can indeed be interesting. But that’s precisely why it’s important to maintain a respectful attitude towards others’ opinions. While blocking is your choice, it may be worthwhile to take a moment to reflect beforehand. Just imagining how you would feel if you were on the receiving end of those words might shift your perspective a little. I try to use kind language around children, and I aim to carry that spirit into my online interactions as well. If we can engage in constructive exchanges rather than resorting to defamation, our online experiences will surely become more enjoyable.
