Reader’s Question:
I’ve heard that Miyasako-san threw the ceremonial first pitch for the Dodgers, but it seems that he hasn’t received much positive feedback in Japan. Does that mean there is still demand for him globally? Perhaps our perspective is limited. Is his humor still relevant?
Discussion on Miyasako-san and the Ceremonial First Pitch
I was a bit surprised to hear
that Miyasako-san threw the ceremonial first pitch for the Dodgers. Imagining him doing something overseas feels refreshing. However, it seems that he isn’t highly regarded in Japan. In particular, opinions about his humor appear to be quite divided.
Is His Humor Still Relevant?
Personally, I believe Miyasako-san’s humor is still very much alive. It’s true that opinions about him can vary widely, but if people overseas who have seen his skits on YouTube found them funny, that’s something to be happy about. I remember watching his stand-up with friends in the past and laughing so hard that my stomach hurt. However, it seems that he wasn’t directly invited by the Dodgers. The fact that the president of Rokondo chose him as a substitute gives a glimpse into the business side of things. Perhaps they were aiming for some publicity. While I’m thrilled to see my favorite comedian gaining attention abroad, I still think his reputation in Japan is important.
How Humor is Received Overseas
It’s clear that YouTube transcends borders, providing more opportunities for people around the world to experience Japanese comedy. Perhaps Miyasako-san’s unique sense of humor resonates with international audiences. I recently watched an American comedy show and thought, “This is so typically Japanese humor.” It really reinforces the idea that laughter crosses cultural boundaries.
