Middle School Student from Kanagawa
As a second-year middle school student living in Kanagawa, I find myself caught up in the whirlwind of anticipation and disappointment that often accompanies school trips. This year, our school trip was set to be
a memorable journey to the historic cities of Kyoto and Nara. These places are known for their stunning temples, beautiful gardens, and rich cultural heritage. However, recent rumors have thrown a wrench into my excitement—there’s talk that our trip might be redirected to the Osaka Expo instead.
School Trip to Kyoto and Nara
The thought of wandering through the ancient streets of Kyoto, with its iconic Kinkaku-ji and Fushimi Inari Taisha, fills me with joy. The chance to experience the tranquility of Nara Park, where the friendly deer roam freely, and to visit Todai-ji, home to the Great Buddha, is something I had been looking forward to for months. These experiences would not only enrich my understanding of Japanese history and culture but also create lasting memories with my classmates. But now, as the rumors swirl, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment. The Osaka Expo is an impressive event showcasing innovations from around the world, but it doesn’t hold the same cultural significance as Kyoto and Nara. Attending the Expo might feel more like a field trip to a modern exhibition than a deep dive into Japan’s historical roots. I understand that the Expo is an exciting opportunity, but it’s not what I was hoping for when I imagined this school trip. If it’s going to turn into an excursion to the Expo, I honestly wonder if it would be better to skip the trip altogether. I know this may sound dramatic, but for me, the essence of a school trip is to explore and learn about our own heritage. The thought of missing out on the timeless beauty of Kyoto and Nara is heartbreaking.
