Recently, many people were surprised by Masahiro Nakai’s announcement of his retirement. I am one of them. Reflecting on his career, I realize just how much he meant to me. Nakai’s lively conversations on variety shows, his unique timing, and most importantly, his humanity were truly captivating. I still remember the first time I watched
Nakai’s show when I was in elementary school. I was laughing with my friends in front of the TV, and even now, I can recall those moments. Whenever he appeared on screen, no matter how tired I was, his presence revived my spirits. His shows not only brought laughter but also provided moments of emotion and tears, serving as a source of comfort for me.
Considering the Background of His Retirement
Returning to the topic of his retirement, when I consider the recent troubles and their background, I find myself not only surprised but also somewhat understanding of the situation. As a fan, I feel the emotional response of “I can’t believe this!” but when I think rationally, it seems there may have been difficult reasons for him to step away. Particularly when reflecting on the reports of troubles with women in June and the ensuing controversies, I can imagine how challenging his position must have been. As a fan, it’s natural to feel that “he was forced out despite being innocent,” but considering his personality and his relationship with fans, it might have made us even more concerned, especially since he is not someone who shares much about himself.

Many fans might be wondering, “Why did this happen to Nakai, who has always worked hard for others?” I, too, was just a viewer, but when I think about the long-time fans, I can deepen my understanding of their feelings. They have watched Nakai’s life unfold, so the impact of his retirement is immeasurable for them. Though it may seem presumptuous for me to say, I can sense just how significant Nakai’s presence has been for his fans. Knowing about his dedication during his illness and his efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic makes it even more painful for me.
