Life After Fame: Can Retired Entertainers Like Nakai-san Pursue New Careers?

Reader’s Question:
Is it permissible for Nakai-san to become a company president after retiring from the entertainment industry? Or must he completely retire from society? Does that mean he can only live off savings? Is working part-time at a convenience store also off-limits?

Thinking About Life After Retirement from the Entertainment Industry

Recently, a friend asked me, “Can Nakai-san become a
president of a company after retiring from the entertainment industry?” Since I’m also interested in law, I thought about it a bit. In reality, just because someone retires from the entertainment industry doesn’t mean they can’t pursue other careers. In fact, they may even have more freedom to engage in various activities.

Options After Retirement

Quitting activities as a celebrity simply means that they will not be accepting offers from that industry anymore. Declaring retirement does not restrict one’s ability to participate in social activities. Becoming a company president or working as a sole proprietor is entirely up to them. For instance, I know someone who left their career as a talent and opened their own restaurant. They expressed, “I want to use my past experiences and do what I love moving forward,” which left a strong impression on me. Of course, some companies might not be open to hiring celebrities. Nevertheless, the fact that one can pursue any profession in society is a testament to living in a free country. I have had the opportunity to see how well-known individuals start fresh while working in law. They often utilize their past experiences and work diligently.

Sharing Real Stories and Emotions

Personally, as I studied law at university, I found myself contemplating the lives of entertainers after retirement more often. One day, while working part-time at a judicial scrivener’s office, a former idol came in for a consultation. She mentioned, “I want to work in the food industry from now on.” Her eyes sparkled, and she seemed not to dwell too much on her past. Seeing that encouraged me, as it made me realize that people can find new paths while carrying their past experiences. Of course, life after retirement might come with uncertainties, and they might be concerned about how society perceives them. However, what truly matters is what one wants to do and how they want to shape their life. Recently, I found myself waking up too early and overindulging in sweets while waiting at a café. Such small pleasures can enrich life. In closing, I would love to hear about everyone else’s experiences and thoughts. If you have any interesting stories or advice about new challenges outside the entertainment industry, please share them in the comments. I hope to incorporate them into my own life moving forward.
