Reader’s Question:
While Ken Shimura’s skits remain a part of history, why is Takashi Ishibashi’s alleged sexual harassment now being scrutinized? It feels unfair that only Ishibashi is being criticized when everyone was doing similar things back then.
Ken Shimura, Takashi Ishibashi, and the Sexual Harassment Issue
Recently, Ken Shimura’s skits continue to be loved by many, while the issue of
Takashi Ishibashi’s alleged sexual harassment has gained more attention. It’s interesting to consider why such a difference exists. I believe that Ken Shimura has passed away, and many people cherish the happy memories and laughter his work brings. Because of this, his actions and statements tend to be viewed more positively. In contrast, Ishibashi’s case involves a living person, and the issue of sexual harassment is currently under active discussion. As societal values and perspectives shift over time, it’s perhaps inevitable that Ishibashi’s actions are now being questioned.
Changing Values Over Time
Through my own experience studying law, I’ve come to realize that societal values evolve. What was once acceptable 25 years ago is now completely unacceptable. This reflects how much society has progressed and how the voices of victims are now being valued. The issue of sexual harassment has been influenced by a long-standing environment where victims found it difficult to speak out. I recall a senior colleague from when I worked part-time at a judicial scrivener’s office saying, “The law is a living thing. Its interpretation changes with time, so we must always continue to learn.” Considering this, it might be essential to evaluate Ishibashi’s actions through the lens of current values while also taking into account the context of the time.
An Era That Values Victims’ Voices
Certainly, many people may have engaged in similar behaviors in the past. However, that doesn’t mean it was acceptable. The fact that victims often had to suffer in silence in those days emphasizes the need to truly listen to their voices now. The perpetrators may forget, but the victims do not. I often find myself reflecting on past events, contemplating how they were perceived at the time. It’s crucial for all of us to remember that there are important messages within laughter.
