Question from readers:
Are many citizens in favor of NHK’s scrambler system?
What do you think about NHK’s scrambler system?
Recently, I had the chance to discuss NHK’s scrambler system with a friend. He expressed that he dislikes paying the reception fee and is in favor of the scrambler system. Honestly, as I listened to his opinion, I found myself relating
to many of his points. He mentioned that it seems unreasonable to pay for programs you don’t want to watch.
Dissatisfaction with the reception fee
Our generation has so many options beyond just terrestrial television, like Netflix and YouTube, right? In that context, being told we have to pay NHK’s reception fee feels a bit frustrating. Especially for those who don’t watch, it’s natural to think, “Why do I have to pay?” My friend said, “If you don’t want to pay the reception fee, don’t have a device with a tuner.” That reasoning seems a bit flawed to me. If they sell a television that only shows NHK, then what’s the point of the reception fee? Plus, I think it’s much more enjoyable to watch videos online rather than pay for programs you don’t want to see (laughs).
NHK’s self-help efforts and viewers’ rights
I’ve also been reflecting on the quality of the programs NHK offers. As my friend pointed out, “If they provide what people want to see, the reception fee will come back.” I wish they would put more effort into creating content that viewers genuinely want to watch. If they do that, I believe the audience would naturally grow. Personally, I used to watch NHK documentaries, but lately, I haven’t found much interest in them anymore. If there were interesting programs, I would feel that the reception fee is worth it, but right now, that’s not how I feel.
What’s your opinion?
Talking with my friend like this, I find it interesting to hear various opinions. What do you think about NHK’s scrambler system? Are you in favor or opposed? Please share your thoughts and experiences in the comments! I’m looking forward to hearing everyone’s opinions.
