Question from a reader:
What impact does the incident involving Mr. Tachibana from the NHK Party being attacked have on democracy? How serious is such an event for our politics and society?
Reflecting on the Attack on Mr. Tachibana
Recently, there have been various opinions circulating about the incident where Mr. Tachibana was attacked. When I first saw the news, I
couldn’t help but think, “Why would something like this happen?” I believe democracy is truly important.
The Importance of Democracy and the Electoral System
It’s absolutely true that the electoral system is the foundation of democracy. To disrupt that with violence is, without a doubt, an act that shakes the very essence of democracy. However, when I heard about Mr. Tachibana’s candidacy, I felt a bit conflicted. Running for governor of Chiba Prefecture while campaigning in other areas certainly raises questions like, “Wait, why is that?”
Karma or Just Violence?
It might be a harsh opinion to interpret the attack on Mr. Tachibana as “karma,” but I do think there was an aspect of trying to draw attention by leveraging his position. However, that does not justify the violence, and the fact that there are people who want to inflict harm is itself a problem. The unfolding of events felt like something out of a movie, and honestly, I was shocked.
My Memories and Emotions
Personally, I’ve watched various comedies and performances, and sometimes I laugh so hard that I end up in tears. I feel that because I have those moments, I can think lightly about societal and political issues. However, today’s topic is a bit heavy. Discussions involving violence and trouble tend to weigh on my heart. As a father with children, I genuinely want to create a better society for the future. I hope we can learn something from such incidents and make positive changes.
