Before the game started, we were all excitedly saying, “We want to see Ohtani hit a home run!” while enjoying our beers and cheering. Then, the moment he hit a home run, the surrounding fans all stood up and cheered together. That sense of unity in that moment is something I will never forget. However, there have been recent comments suggesting that “people will drift away if his performance declines.” It’s true that the popularity of sports figures is heavily influenced by their performance. I can relate, as there have been players I used to admire who fell off the radar due to poor performance.
