Fuji TV’s Compensation Dilemma: Why Masahiro Nakai Is Not Facing Legal Action

Fuji TV and Masahiro Nakai’s Compensation Issue

Recently, there have been many questions regarding why Fuji TV is not seeking compensation from Masahiro Nakai. The news that Fuji Media Holdings reported a deficit of 20.1 billion yen for the fiscal year ending March 2025 was shocking. Upon seeing this news, I couldn’t help but think, “Wait, did that really happen?”
There are many voices suggesting that the handling of Nakai’s sexual misconduct issue has led to a loss of sponsors. In fact, advertising revenue has significantly decreased, and operating profit has dropped by more than 45% compared to the previous year, which must be a very tough situation for the company. Amidst this, I also wondered why Fuji TV is not pursuing compensation from Nakai.

Considering from a Legal Perspective

First, from a legal perspective, the relationship between a company and an individual involves complex factors. It appears that Nakai’s side has prepared a team of lawyers, which suggests a response that goes beyond merely managing a scandal. If Fuji TV were to file a lawsuit against Nakai, it might risk highlighting its own issues. Thus, it is likely that they are hesitant to seek compensation. Additionally, the impending shareholders’ meeting is likely a significant factor. There is a need to prepare for questions from shareholders, and initiating some action against Nakai could lead to further issues. In other words, they may believe that not pursuing compensation at this moment is the more prudent course of action.

My Thoughts and Feelings

When considering this issue, it raises many questions about corporate responsibility and ethics. Personally, as someone studying psychology at university, I find these matters very intriguing. How a company should respond to an individual, and how the outcomes affect the company’s image and shareholder trust, are certainly not straightforward. Just the other day, while discussing this topic with a friend at a café, he remarked, “Companies are made up of people, so they have emotions too, and it’s not easy to make decisions.” Indeed, there are many individuals behind a corporation, and individual emotions and beliefs can influence decisions. Finally, I would love to hear your thoughts on this issue. Please share your comments. If you have any interesting opinions or new perspectives, feel free to share them.
