Questions from Readers:
Regarding the recent post by a woman who has been criticized unilaterally about a certain incident, where she expressed, “I would be happy if there are more things that I can find enjoyable, and if I can spend time laughing,” what are your thoughts? I honestly thought, “That’s great!” After everything that happened, she was hurt, both
mentally and physically, yet she is still trying to look forward. I find that inspiring. I can’t understand the people who criticize her by saying things like, “You can see the soles of her feet” or “She has two people serving her.” Is it really necessary to nitpick about the composition of the photo or the issue at hand? When the victim finally finds a way to smile, is it appropriate to sarcastically ask, “Does that mean you’re having fun?” Whose perspective is that coming from? Rather, I felt that her post conveyed a “will to live strongly,” and it touched my heart. Some fans of Nakai-san say, “Even though the settlement money was paid, there’s a confidentiality obligation,” but are they suggesting she should remain silent forever? Have they ever imagined how much she must have suffered during the years of silence following that incident? Moreover, it wasn’t even reported under her real name; it was only referred to as “X-ko” in Bunshun. Who is responsible for identifying and criticizing her? Isn’t it the fans themselves? The narrative that Nakai-san settled “for the fans” and “to avoid causing trouble for others” is often portrayed as a noble deed, but isn’t that essentially just “running away from public disputes”? In the shadows of that, the victim was forced into silence, taking a break from social media, and now that she has finally regained a bit of her daily life, it’s a bit abnormal to nitpick at her post. Who do you think is taking away her “time to laugh”?
The Importance of Laughter
Recently, a woman posted on social media, “I would be happy if there are more things that I can find enjoyable, and if I can spend time laughing.” This post has sparked quite a conversation. The reactions to it were somewhat surprising. Despite having endured a truly painful experience related to that incident, her determination to move forward inspired me, and I couldn’t understand why she was being criticized. I, too, love comedy and seek laughter daily, so I deeply resonate with her wish to cherish her “time to laugh.” Laughter is essential for mental health, isn’t it? Watching comedy shows or performances with children can lead to unexpected moments of laughter, which can truly alleviate stress and bring happiness.
Not Understanding the Criticisms
That said, I cannot comprehend the feelings of those who criticize her posts with comments like “You can see the soles of her feet” or “She has two people serving her.” At such a time, I believe it is natural to support her in her efforts to find joy. Rather, I felt her strong will and found courage in her actions. It’s also disconcerting that some fans complain, “Even though the settlement money was paid, there’s a confidentiality obligation.” They may not even be able to fathom the extent of her suffering. Especially since she wasn’t reported under her real name, understanding the feelings of those who identified and criticized her as “X-ko” is beyond me.
Changes in Society and Understanding
Indeed, I believe that society is changing. There was a time when endurance was considered a virtue, but now many people feel it’s important to speak up. I, too, feel it’s not right to teach children that “enduring something is beautiful.” Instead, I want to support them in valuing their own feelings. In that context, her attempts to reclaim a life where she can laugh seems like a beacon of hope for all of us. Therefore, it is disappointing that there are those who cannot wish for her happiness, even a little.
