Question from a reader:
Can you tell me what word fits in the blank regarding issues related to international law?
Issues Related to International Law and Their Solutions
When you hear the term international law, it might sound a bit formal. However, it is actually a field that we often engage with unconsciously in our daily lives. Today, I would like
to consider a particular issue related to international law and propose a solution to that issue.
What is International Law?
International law refers to the regulations that govern international relations between states, international organizations, and individuals. To put it simply, it is the rules that determine “how countries can get along with each other.” This includes international treaties, customary law, and international case law. A familiar example that we often encounter is the regulations regarding visas and passports when traveling. For instance, when traveling from the United States to Japan, you may need to obtain a visa. This is determined by international law based on agreements between countries.
Important Issues in International Law
Now, let’s take the “territorial disputes” as an example of an issue related to international law. In particular, many countries in the Asian region have conflicts over territories. I personally have found myself passionately discussing this topic with friends while traveling. For example, the territorial disputes between China and neighboring countries in the South China Sea are very complex issues within the framework of international law. The problem here is that as each country tries to protect its own interests, they strengthen their claims against one another, making it difficult to find a solution. Since international law is fundamentally based on the agreements of the countries involved, without consensus, resolution is not possible.
Solutions Through International Law
So, how does international law function in addressing these territorial issues? First and foremost, there is the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The ICJ is an institution established to resolve disputes between states using a legal approach. For example, recently, a territorial dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia was brought to the International Court of Justice. In this case, both countries agreed in advance to appeal to the court, allowing for a resolution in accordance with legal procedures. In this way, while international law may lack enforcement power, it promotes dialogue between states and provides a pathway to problem-solving.
Limitations of International Law
However, international law also has its limitations. For instance, the tense relationship between the United States and Russia often transcends the framework of international law. In such situations, even if there are provisions in international law, they are frequently not applied in practice. Ultimately, the power dynamics between strong nations often play a significant role. In my opinion, while international law serves as a tool for envisioning an ideal world, the realities of political dynamics often distort that vision. I find myself surprised by this at times as well.
Suggestions from an Individual Perspective
So, what approaches can we, as ordinary citizens, take through international law to address international issues? First, education and awareness-raising activities are crucial. For example, enhancing international law classes in schools or holding discussions on international issues in local communities can be beneficial. This way, the next generation can understand the importance of international law and build a foundation for a better future. Furthermore, it is also important to disseminate information about international issues through social media and other platforms. I personally strive to share articles about international law and engage in discussions with friends to encourage more people to take an interest.
Conclusion
International law not only establishes rules between nations but also influences our daily lives. For territorial issues and international disputes, international dialogue and education are essential. Of course, there are limitations to international law, but I believe that by actively engaging, we can move in a better direction, even if just a little. Thank you for reading to the end. Reflecting on international law may be a step toward making the future better. Please feel free to engage others in discussions on this topic!
