Exploring Generational Differences in Japanese Music: From Yamaguchi Momoe to Hamasaki Ayumi

Question from a Reader:
I’m a fan of Yamaguchi Momoe, Matsuda Seiko, and Nakamori Akina. Do you think it’s common for people to also like Hamasaki Ayumi, Koda Kumi, and Nishino Kana?

Differences in Musical Tastes by Generation

It’s fascinating how people’s tastes in music can vary so much. Often, preferences are influenced by generational differences. While many people love Yamaguchi Momoe, Matsuda Seiko, and Nakamori Akina, opinions seem to differ when it comes to Hamasaki Ayumi, Koda Kumi, and Nishino Kana. I am also a fan of Nakamori Akina. There’s
something truly special about her voice. Many people resonate with her unique aura and lyrics, and I’m one of them. Listening to Akina’s songs feels like being drawn into her world. Especially with “Kazari janai no yo, Namida wa,” every time I hear it, my heart trembles.

Unexpected Discoveries and Shared Feelings

Recently, I’ve found myself listening to more songs by Hamasaki Ayumi and Koda Kumi. Initially, I wasn’t too interested, but when I went to karaoke with friends, I casually sang one of their songs and was surprisingly entertained. In particular, Hamasaki Ayumi’s “M” evokes a nostalgic feeling, reminding me of moments from that time. Of course, musical preferences are subjective, so I understand that some might feel “dislike” or “indifference” towards Koda Kumi or Nishino Kana. Music connects directly to our emotions, so it’s natural to have strong feelings for our favorite artists.

Musical Tastes as a Reflection of Personality

I believe that musical preferences are a reflection of one’s personality. My fascination with idols from that era means that even now, when I listen to their songs, my heart dances with joy. Memories from that time and the songs I enjoyed with friends continue to live on in my heart. On a side note, there was a time I arrived at karaoke too early and ended up eating too many snacks before we started. Those little mishaps have become funny stories to share now.
