Cherishing Parenting Memories: How to Capture the Joys of Raising Multiple Children

Reader’s Question:
Tsuji-chan mentioned that she was too busy during her eldest daughter’s early years to have any memories. Even if she cherishes raising her fifth child, won’t the memories of raising her eldest fade away? What do you think?

Memories of Parenting Are Truly Mysterious

Recently, I heard Tsuji-chan say that she was too busy during her eldest daughter’s early
years to remember much, and I found myself relating to that sentiment. When I first started parenting, every day flew by so quickly that I sometimes struggle to recall what I was doing. Especially during the first experience of raising a child, I was so focused on the task at hand that I didn’t have the capacity to remember the little details. For instance, I can still vividly remember the moment my eldest daughter took her first steps, but with all the chaotic days that followed, many small events have become increasingly vague. I often can’t recall what we talked about or the smiles we shared during that time. I realize now that I didn’t have the mental space to absorb it all during those first experiences.

Raising the Fifth Child Is Different!

However, as Tsuji-chan mentioned, when it comes to raising the fifth child, having confidence and a sense of ease makes me want to remember these moments even more. I also want to apply what I learned from raising my eldest child to cherish each moment with the next one! Recently, when my son pointed to a picture book and asked, “What’s this?” I couldn’t help but laugh. He has just started learning words, yet he is so curious and interested in everything around him. The sparkle in his eyes during that moment is something I will never forget. I want to cherish these little moments. Of course, parenting can be challenging, but within those challenges, there are laughs, surprises, and it’s important not to miss the daily growth. For example, when my son tried to put on his shoes for the first time and attempted to wear them upside down, I couldn’t help but laugh. Capturing those moments with a camera is one of the joys of parenting.
