Looking for Recommendations for a Day Trip from Totsuka
My Day Trip to Kamakura: Temples, Snacks, and a Little Misadventure
So, I recently found myself in the same boat as you—staring at a map of Japan, wondering where to go
for a day trip from Totsuka. My budget was tight (hello, student life), and I wanted something close enough to explore without feeling rushed. After some Googling and a few too many cups of tea, I settled on Kamakura. And let me tell you, it was the perfect choice!
The Early Bird Gets the… Train?
My friend and I decided to leave early to make the most of the day. We aimed for 8:00 AM but, of course, ended up at the station by 7:30 because I’m that person who’s always weirdly early. (Seriously, I once showed up to a movie an hour early and just sat there eating popcorn alone. No regrets.) The train ride from Totsuka to Kamakura was quick—about 20 minutes—and cost less than 500 yen each way. Perfect for our budget! We grabbed some onigiri and bottled tea from the convenience store (because snacks are non-negotiable) and hopped on the train.
First Stop: The Great Buddha
Our first destination was Kotoku-in Temple, home to the iconic Great Buddha of Kamakura. Let me just say, photos do NOT do this massive bronze statue justice. Standing there, looking up at its serene face, I felt this weird mix of awe and calm. My friend, on the other hand, was more interested in trying to take the perfect Instagram shot. (Spoiler: It took 15 tries.) We spent about an hour wandering the temple grounds, snapping photos, and debating whether the Buddha’s expression was “wise” or “judgmental.” (We settled on “mildly amused.”)
Snack Attack on Komachi Street
After the temple, we headed to Komachi Street, a bustling alley filled with food stalls and souvenir shops. This is where things got… indulgent. We tried everything: matcha soft serve, grilled mochi, fish-shaped taiyaki filled with custard, and even some weirdly delicious purple sweet potato fries. By the time we reached the end of the street, we were so full that we had to sit down and laugh at our lack of self-control.
A Surprising Discovery: Hokokuji Temple
Feeling a little sluggish from all the snacks, we decided to walk off the calories and stumbled upon Hokokuji Temple, also known as the “Bamboo Temple.” This place was like stepping into another world. The bamboo grove was so peaceful, and the sound of the wind rustling through the stalks was oddly therapeutic. We sat in the tea house there, sipping matcha and pretending to be wise philosophers. (Spoiler: We were not.)
The Misadventure: Missing the Last Train (Almost)
As the sun started to set, we realized we’d lost track of time. Panic set in when we checked the train schedule and saw that the last train back to Totsuka was in 30 minutes. Cue us speed-walking (okay, borderline running) through Kamakura’s streets, dodging tourists and trying not to trip over our own feet. We made it with five minutes to spare, but let’s just say it was a very close call.
Reflections and Tips
Looking back, Kamakura was the perfect day trip. It had a mix of history, nature, and delicious food—all within our budget. Plus, the misadventures made it even more memorable. If you’re planning a similar trip, here are my tips: 1. Wear comfy shoes. You’ll be walking a lot. 2. Bring cash. Some smaller shops and temples don’t take cards. 3. Don’t over-snack like we did. (Okay, maybe do. Life’s short.) So, what about you? Have you been to Kamakura or somewhere else nearby? I’d love to hear your recommendations or funny stories in the comments! Let’s swap travel tales and tips. 😊
