Reader’s Question:
What did you all think of this week’s Anpan? Personally, I feel that they didn’t need to force it into a young adult theme. Even after seven years, the characters seem to have a much lower emotional maturity than expected.
Thoughts on This Week’s Anpan
There have been various opinions flying around about last week’s Anpan. Reading the comments
from everyone has made me reflect a lot. Indeed, I think the development in the young adult storyline felt a bit forced. It’s concerning that even after seven years, the characters still appear to have low emotional maturity.
Memorable Moments
Recently, as I’ve been raising my own children, I’ve come to understand the feelings of watching the characters in Anpan grow, just like I do with my kids. Particularly, the scene where Takashi and Chihiro’s mother returns brought back nostalgic feelings. I remember feeling excited when my mother came home when I was a child, and I found myself empathizing with that moment. Then there’s the scene of the bread-eating competition. I did think it was a bit of a farce, but perhaps that lighthearted exchange is what brings out the fun in Anpan. I also enjoy having snack time at home with my children, sharing those light-hearted moments that feel like a little skit.
The Necessity of the Young Adult Theme
That being said, the existence of the young adult storyline does allow for some sense of character growth. I was a bit surprised by the scene where Takashi interrupted Nobu-chan’s story. It might have been necessary to depict his internal struggles and growth at that moment. However, today’s high school and college students definitely seem to have a more composed image. I feel that when I was that age, I was also contemplating a lot of things. I wonder if the characters in Anpan could have been portrayed as a bit more mature, but perhaps that very innocence is part of their charm.
