Question from a reader:
Is it really tough to survive in the entertainment industry?
The Harsh Reality and Moments of Opportunity in the Entertainment Industry
Recently, I was having a conversation with a friend about the difficulties of the entertainment industry. He loves comedy, especially stand-up and storytelling. According to him, the entertainment world is incredibly volatile. When watching television, you
often notice new faces or groups suddenly appearing, while many others seem to disappear without a trace. I can relate to that feeling. Especially with the rise of YouTube and social media, there are more and more people creating unique content. When we were kids, television was the main source of entertainment, but now we can enjoy global entertainment right at our fingertips, which has a tremendous impact. My friend mentioned that “60% of advertising costs have shifted to web ads,” and I couldn’t agree more.
Opportunities Amidst Challenges
Honestly, though, I believe that there are opportunities even in the midst of hardship. As a dad, I find myself juggling work and parenting every day, but my children’s smiles and funny moments fuel my energy. I think the same goes for entertainers and creators; tough situations often lead to new ideas and innovations. Not long ago, I went to an open mic night for comedy with a friend, and there were so many interesting people. The spontaneous interactions on stage were incredibly enjoyable. The performers were unafraid to express their own styles, and I was truly inspired by their attitude. It reminded me that in the entertainment industry, as in life, valuing “being true to oneself” is essential.
