Recently, I’ve been hearing a lot about the negative opinions surrounding Yuzuru Hanyu. His achievements and presence are truly remarkable, yet there are many critical voices that arise in the shadows. To be honest, I find
it a bit surprising. Personally, watching Hanyu’s performances sometimes brings me to tears due to their emotional impact, so I struggle to understand why such aggressive opinions exist.
The Odd Nature of Jealousy
In conversations with friends, we’ve discussed the idea that “the negativity towards Hanyu might stem from jealousy.” Of course, I believe that everyone experiences feelings of jealousy at some point. I, too, sometimes wonder, “Why is that person so successful?” However, directing that jealousy into attacks on others is certainly not right. For instance, I recently watched a comedy where, every time the protagonist succeeded, those around him became increasingly jealous, leading to absurd situations. The entire audience was laughing, and while watching, I thought, “Jealousy is truly a troublesome emotion.” Perhaps for someone as talented and beloved as Hanyu, having critics is simply a part of the package.
Let’s Acknowledge Hanyu’s Greatness
Hanyu’s technical skill, expressive ability, and charisma are indeed extraordinary. When he held an ice show that I watched on television, I was completely captivated. His performance transcended mere sport and felt like a work of art. After witnessing that, there should be no room for jealousy. What we can do is recognize his efforts and talent and support him wholeheartedly. I believe we should focus on spreading positive energy rather than getting swept away by negative opinions.
