Question from a reader:
Is there a case where a Self-Defense Force helicopter was immediately requested in Yashio City, and they were able to rescue someone by lowering a rope ladder?
Thoughts on Rescue Cases by Self-Defense Force Helicopters
Recently, I heard about a rescue operation in Yashio City using a Self-Defense Force helicopter, and it got me thinking. The idea that a Self-Defense Force helicopter could be called upon instantly and lower a rope ladder for a rescue sounds like something out of a movie. However, as I discussed this
with friends, I realized that reality is not that simple. If the fire department has its own helicopter, they would likely handle the situation first. Additionally, flying a helicopter in an urban area is not an easy task. Especially if someone is trapped in the driver’s seat, lowering a ladder may not be sufficient for a rescue. Just imagining being stuck in the driver’s seat is enough to induce panic; I can picture someone becoming overwhelmed in that situation.
The Difference Between Reality and Movies
I remember going to see an action movie with friends where the hero lowered a rope ladder from a helicopter to make a swift rescue. We laughed and said, “There’s no way that could happen in real life.” After hearing about this recent incident, I realized that in reality, there are many factors to consider, such as situational judgment and technical challenges. Moreover, it is standard for the fire department to respond first. I believe that cases requiring the deployment of the Self-Defense Force are quite rare and special circumstances. Therefore, even if a rescue by helicopter did occur, it wouldn’t happen as easily as it might seem.
