Reader’s Question:
I have a question about the original Dragon Ball series. In episode 125, the God of Earth tells Goku, “I was one with Piccolo. I was a single martial artist. At one point, I learned of the existence of God and came here (to Earth). Just like you.” When
he says “just like you,” does that mean he knew Goku was an alien? Also, I haven’t read the original manga, but at this point, was the storyline for Dragon Ball Z already planned out? If anyone has thoughts on this, I would appreciate it!
Dragon Ball Mysteries: A Dive into Goku and the God of Earth
It’s always fascinating to reflect on the moments from classic series like Dragon Ball that leave us pondering their implications. I recently came across a question about episode 125, where the God of Earth tells Goku, “Just like you.” The inquiry sparked my curiosity and made me think about the broader narrative behind these words. In the user’s response, they clarified that the God of Earth was not making any grand revelations about Goku’s alien heritage. Instead, it seems that he was simply recounting his own journey to the heavenly realm after learning of the divine. It makes sense; after all, at that point in the series, Goku’s Saiyan origins were not yet a part of the storyline. I remember my own surprise when I learned about the various alien races in Dragon Ball during later arcs. It’s almost comical how oblivious characters can be about their own backgrounds! Reflecting back, it’s intriguing to think about how Goku, who later becomes this powerful alien warrior, was initially just a simple boy from Earth. The interactions between characters like Goku and the God of Earth highlight the mythical undertones of the series. The God of Earth, in essence, was a martial artist who sought enlightenment, much like Goku himself. It’s these layers of character development that make the series both relatable and profound. I also found it interesting when the user mentioned the character Kattatsu, who ended up forgetting his origins due to a head injury. This aspect of memory loss and identity is a powerful theme that resonates with many of us. Sometimes, we can feel disconnected from our roots or struggle to understand where we fit in the grand scheme of things. Kattatsu’s realization that he was an alien, and his subsequent feelings of being ‘different,’ struck a chord with me. It’s a reminder that we all have our own journeys of self-discovery, some of which can be quite humorous or surprising! As a part-time worker and a psychology major, I often find myself analyzing these character arcs. They reflect real human emotions and struggles, even if they are set in a fantastical universe. I love how art can mirror life, and Dragon Ball is a perfect example of that. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this too! Have you had any moments in shows or books that made you reflect on your own identity? Or perhaps you have some quirky memories tied to your favorite series?
