Question from a reader:
With Koizumi-san becoming the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, was this ministry completely non-functional before his appointment? The price of rice hasn’t decreased at all, and I’m worried about what’s going on.
Change in the Minister of Agriculture and Rice Prices
Recently, I heard the news that Koizumi-san has taken office as the Minister of Agriculture,
and it made me feel a bit excited. The truth is, I love rice and it’s an essential part of my daily meals. So, I have some thoughts on this topic.
The Past and Future of the Ministry of Agriculture
Looking at the reader’s question, there seems to be a sentiment that the Ministry of Agriculture was “completely non-functional.” Indeed, the reality of rice prices not decreasing is concerning. I also feel the pressure on my household budget every time the price of rice goes up. Thinking back to the previous minister, Eto-san, I can’t help but feel a bit ironic. While I understand that being a second-generation politician gives him strong influence within the ministry, I can’t shake the impression that he was too compliant with JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives). Instead of lowering the price of rice, it only increased, leading me to conclude that the ministry was “not functional.”
My Experiences and Feelings
A few years ago, I went to Niigata with friends to experience rice harvesting. Getting muddy in the rice paddies while harvesting together was a memorable experience. The sense of achievement and the deliciousness of that rice is something I still cherish. Every time I eat that rice, I remember the hard work of the farmers. However, recently seeing the price tags for rice at the supermarket makes me feel a bit sad. Now that I have a family, wanting to provide my children with delicious meals makes the price issue incredibly important.
Expectations for the Future
With Koizumi-san’s appointment, I hope for some changes to occur. After all, rice is a part of Japanese culture, and I wish more people could enjoy affordable and delicious rice. What do you all think? If you have any concerns or experiences related to the ministry or rice prices, please share them in the comments. I’d love for us to think, feel, and share together!
