Impact of Shigeru Ishiba’s Leadership on Rice Prices and Household Budgets in Japan

Question from a Reader:
Since Shigeru Ishiba became Prime Minister, I feel like various issues have been increasing lately. In particular, the rise in rice prices and overall living costs has been troublesome. What are your thoughts on this?

Thoughts on Recent Politics and Rice Prices

Recently, I’ve been hearing a lot of complaints about rising prices since Shigeru Ishiba became
Prime Minister. Many people seem to be struggling with the increase in rice prices. I can relate to that, especially since I have children and food expenses are a significant concern. When rice prices go up, it becomes a source of daily worry regarding meals. In fact, just recently, when I tried to buy rice at my local supermarket, I did a double-take at the shocking price. I thought, “Wait, is this really the price for rice?” It could have turned into a funny story, but the reality is that it hits the household budget hard, which isn’t amusing at all.

Expectations and Disappointments with Ishiba

I have to admit that I have some expectations for Ishiba. There’s something captivating about his unique character and the mysterious qualities that make people liken him to a yokai. However, it seems that he is in a position where he can’t act solely on his will, which is a bit disappointing. Hearing about his ties with the LDP and JA makes the political web murkier, and it becomes unclear what the real issues are. From our perspective as ordinary citizens, we want to understand how the actions of politicians impact us, and we hope for greater transparency. The discussions related to JA can be surprising at first. We hope that policies will be implemented to ensure that farmers’ hard work is rewarded.

What We Can Do

Ultimately, I believe what we can do is reflect our opinions through our votes in elections. In the upcoming House of Councillors election, I want to choose candidates who seriously consider agricultural policies. I’ve resolved to do my research before casting my vote next time. So, how do you all feel about the recent fluctuations in prices? If you have any interesting stories or advice regarding rice prices, please share them in the comments! I would love to think through this together with you all.
