Question from a Reader:
I’m concerned about Naoya Inoue as he moves up to featherweight. Do you think there are physical challenges he might face?
Considering Naoya Inoue’s Challenges
I was chatting with friends, and we started talking about Naoya Inoue. His matches always draw a lot of attention, but there seem to be growing concerns about his move to featherweight,
which makes me a bit worried. Every time I watch Inoue’s fights, I’m amazed by his speed and technique. However, moving up to featherweight means he’ll be facing opponents with significantly more physical strength. The power and endurance of those fighters can’t be matched solely by speed. Especially as he ages and gains more ring experience, fatigue will become a factor, and he’ll need to develop strategies beyond just going for knockouts.
The Importance of Point Fighting
Inoue may need to shift to a point-fighting style similar to Floyd Mayweather as his career progresses. I remember discussing with friends while watching boxing matches, saying, “Just going for knockouts can be exhausting.” As fights accumulate, there’s no doubt that both physical and mental stamina will be put to the test. Moreover, considering the stress and pressure he faces fighting former champions and tough opponents, it makes me anxious as a supporter. Sometimes, I get so nervous before his fights that I end up munching on snacks, and just imagining what he must feel brings a lump to my throat.
