Question from a reader:
Sometimes I get told that I resemble President Kuwata from Reiwa no Tora. Is this something I should be happy about?
The Meaning of Being Compared
Recently, a friend told me, “You look like President Kuwata.” At first, I was a bit surprised. President Kuwata, that’s the person from Reiwa no Tora, right? With that distinctive hairstyle
and somewhat dignified expression. While I certainly don’t possess the same charisma, I started to wonder what it meant to be told that I resemble him.
Is It a Good or Bad Thing?
To be honest, I don’t think it’s something to be overly pleased about. Sure, being told you resemble someone can serve as a conversation starter, but it often isn’t a compliment. Especially when compared to someone with a strong personality like President Kuwata, it doesn’t feel like a compliment at all. Instead, it seems to just highlight that I have some sort of characteristic. As I pondered this, I recalled a time when a college friend told me, “You resemble that comedian from back then.” He was the type who was bright and could make those around him laugh, so I was happy to be compared to him. However, being told I look like President Kuwata gives off a vibe of “You’re trying hard, but you still have a long way to go.”
Valuing Your Own Individuality
So, just because someone says you resemble someone else, there’s no need to overly rejoice. Rather, I believe it’s important to find and cherish your own individuality. Of course, it’s possible to take a positive view of resembling someone like President Kuwata. By emulating his success and character, I might be able to grow as well. Speaking of which, when I was working part-time at a judicial scrivener’s office, a senior once told me, “You should have a bit more confidence.” The idea was that having self-confidence influences how others perceive you. Indeed, I believe that people who are confident exude a certain charm.
