Question from a reader:
Who do you think President Zelensky resembles among historical figures? I have a vague impression of Ashikaga Yoshitake.
Zelensky and Historical Figures
Recently, during a conversation with friends, we discussed President Zelensky. The idea of comparing him to historical figures, particularly Ashikaga Yoshitake, came up. At first, I thought, “Why Yoshitake?” But upon reflection, I can see
some commonalities.
Struggles Amidst Powerlessness
Zelensky’s desperate calls for help for his country are striking. The way he is treated lightly by those in power resonates with the challenges Yoshitake faced during the Warring States period. Yoshitake also sought to leverage the power around him but ultimately became a victim of his own fate. Their historical images evoke a shared sense of helplessness and desperation.
Whether a Great Figure or Not
However, it’s difficult to determine if Zelensky himself is a great figure. While he is currently fulfilling his role as a leader facing his country’s crisis, whether he will be remembered in history depends on his future actions. Personally, I find his human side fascinating. For instance, his speeches are imbued with emotion and have the power to inspire the nation.
Small Everyday Events
Recently, while working part-time at a judicial scrivener’s office, I had a casual chat with a client who remarked, “Leadership is important, isn’t it?” This resonated with me and made me reflect on my own shortcomings. After work, I also found myself indulging a bit too much in snacks, which I regretted. Yet, it’s these small discoveries in everyday life that I find enjoyable.
