Anpan Young Adult Edition Review: Are the Characters Growing Up or Staying Stuck?

Question from readers:
What did everyone think of this week’s Anpan? I wonder if it needed to be the young adult edition. Even after seven years, it feels like the characters haven’t grown much mentally. What do you all think?

Thoughts on the Anpan Young Adult Edition

In recent discussions about Anpan, I’ve been hearing a variety of opinions. With the
shift to the young adult edition, many people seem to question the growth of the characters. I have to admit, I’m a bit concerned about that too.

The Mental Age of the Characters

It’s true that today’s youth often seem more mature in their teenage years, so it’s not surprising that the characters appear to have not grown much. When I watch Anpan and see them reacting in a childish way, it sometimes leaves me feeling a bit frustrated. But on the flip side, I think that might also be part of their charm. For instance, the scene with the bread-eating contest felt a bit silly. That scene could have used some reworking. Especially since this week was significant, I felt there could have been a deeper plot development.

Takashi and Chihiro’s Career Choices

The recent scene where Takashi and Chihiro’s mother returned was quite impactful. The reactions were interesting, especially when Takashi expressed his desire for his mother to be by his side; it really warmed my heart. When Nobu-chan tried to talk about Takashi’s struggles and he cut him off, it was a moment that showcased his growth. However, I do think Takashi and the others’ reactions still seem a bit childish. At their age, they should be experiencing more complex emotions regarding career changes and jealousy in relationships, so I wish they would delve into that a bit more.
