Understanding Online Criticism: The Case of Ryoko Hirosue and the Importance of Kindness

Reader’s Question:
I am currently attending kindergarten, and I find it strange that everyone speaks poorly of Ryoko Hirosue. There are many people online who say negative things about her, but I think it must make her feel sad. Did she really do something that bad? I wish people would be kinder to her.

Words on the Internet Regarding Ryoko Hirosue

Recently, I have noticed a lot of news and comments about Ryoko Hirosue online. It concerns me that particularly harsh words directed at her stand out. It seems natural for a child in kindergarten to feel that it is strange when everyone speaks poorly of Ryoko. Children are pure and learn that it is not good to do to others what they themselves dislike. This straightforward perspective is something that can remind adults of important things. In my own life, while working in law, I often find myself reflecting on the question, “What does it mean to hurt someone?”

Stress and Online Defamation

The stress that adults carry can sometimes be directed at others. In the online world, where faces and names are hidden, words can become violent. In Ryoko’s case, incidents such as being involved in an accident or acting violently towards a nurse have been highlighted, and each time she is criticized. Of course, accidents can happen to anyone, and we cannot simply blame someone for their subsequent actions. I have previously received legal inquiries from a client who said, “I’ve been criticized online.” He was reflecting on his own mistakes but was unsure how to deal with the attacks from those around him. My advice was, “First, take care of yourself.” It is not good to be so hard on oneself that one gets tossed around by other people’s words.

Remembering Kindness

I believe that Ryoko works hard to entertain her fans. I think she is not always doing bad things; rather, she possesses warmth and kindness as a person. Perhaps we are judging her based on only one side of her. The teaching that “what you dislike being done to you, you should not do to others” is something I want to remember no matter how old I become. Sometimes, I get caught up in my busyness and forget to show kindness to those around me, but recalling this saying helps me reset myself.
