Question from a Reader:
While listening to SMAP’s songs, I sometimes feel uneasy due to Nakai-san’s influence. When a song plays unexpectedly, that thought inevitably crosses my mind, making me feel bad. Are there others who feel this way?
The Relationship Between Music and Memory
Recently, I’ve heard people say that listening to SMAP’s songs makes them feel uneasy because of
Nakai-san. Indeed, music can be a powerful tool that evokes emotions and memories, so I can understand that feeling. A friend of mine has shared a similar experience. One day, while singing “Sekai ni Hitotsu Dake no Hana” at karaoke, he found that the meaning of the song suddenly changed for him.
Time Can Heal
I have also felt similar sentiments when Takayuki Makihara was arrested or during the time of SMAP’s disbandment due to Johnny-san. At first, every time I listened to those songs, I was overwhelmed by a stirring sensation in my chest. However, as time passed, those feelings naturally faded away. Music is closely tied to personal memories, and it’s natural for those emotions from the past to resurface. For instance, when I studied “The Relationship Between Psychology and Music” in college, I had the opportunity to think about how music influences people’s emotions. Some of the songs played during class were filled with memories of friends from that time. Indeed, music often brings back the emotions and situations we experienced.
The Revival of Taboo Music
I also recall that “Eitoman no Theme” was considered taboo after the lover’s murder incident. It took time before we could listen to that song again, but now it plays normally. As people’s memories and emotions fade, music may once again be accepted. Personally, there are songs that bring back joyful memories with friends, while others may evoke unpleasant memories. The relationship we have with music can be both strange and interesting at times.
